How to Visit Rome on Points: Flights and Hotels Using Miles in 2026

Award travel guide to Rome — best ways to fly business class to FCO, top hotel redemptions in central Rome, and which points programs offer the best Italy value.

By The Points Editor

Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (FCO) is one of Europe’s best-connected gateways. The Eternal City rewards travelers who splurge on central accommodation — a hotel in the centro storico places you within walking distance of the Colosseum, Vatican, Trevi Fountain, and Pantheon. Hotel points can remove one of the biggest budget blockers from a Rome trip.

Getting to Rome (FCO) on Points

Flying Blue (Air France–KLM) — The Promo Award Option

Air France and KLM both serve Rome FCO via their Paris CDG and Amsterdam AMS hubs. Flying Blue is the joint frequent flyer program and offers monthly Promo Awards — 20–50% off select routes:

  • During promos: NYC/Boston/Miami to Rome in Business can drop to 45,000–65,000 miles one-way
  • Standard pricing: 70,000–90,000 miles in Business one-way transatlantic
  • Transfer Chase UR, Amex MR, Citi TYP, or Capital One Miles to Flying Blue (1:1)

The KLM World Business Class and Air France La Première products are both strong. Business class transatlantic is worth the miles investment.

British Airways Avios / Iberia Avios — Multiple Italy Hubs

BA and Iberia both fly to Rome and have code-share connections throughout Italy (Alitalia successor ITA Airways, for example, has some interline agreements):

  • Iberia to Rome via Madrid: 45,000 Avios off-peak, 55,000 peak (Business)
  • British Airways to Rome via London: 70,000–90,000 Avios in Club World Business Class (fuel surcharges apply)

The Iberia routing (via Madrid) is often cheaper in Avios and with lower surcharges.

American AAdvantage — ITA Airways Partnership

ITA Airways (the ITA replacement for Alitalia) is an oneworld associate. AAdvantage miles may be bookable on ITA for transatlantic flights as the partnership develops. Check aa.com for current ITA award availability.

Delta SkyMiles / Air France Partnership

Delta and Air France are SkyTeam partners. Transatlantic to Rome can be booked via Delta SkyMiles:

  • Delta One (Business): 80,000–120,000 miles depending on date and availability
  • Delta pricing is dynamic and can be excellent during flash sales or low-demand periods

Rome Hotels on Points

Rome’s luxury hotel market is concentrated in three neighborhoods: the centro storico (near Pantheon/Spanish Steps), the area around Via Veneto (old-school luxury), and Trastevere/Aventine (characterful neighborhoods).

Rome First-Timer Tips

  • Roma Pass: If your hotel is outside walking range of main sites, the Roma Pass (museum entries + unlimited transit) can save money. But most central hotels are walking distance to everything.
  • Vatican Museums: Book online in advance. Same-day ticket lines are hours long.
  • Tipping: Not standard in Italy. Leave small rounding at restaurants (€1–€2 per person).
  • Water: Rome’s tap water (from fontanelle) is excellent — among the best in Europe. Refill your bottle at street fountains.
  • Best season: April–May and September–October. July/August is extremely hot and crowded with tourists; December–February is uncrowded and cool.
