How to Visit London Using Points: The Best Award Strategies for 2026
Fly to London on points using British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and ANA transfers. Find luxury hotels in Mayfair and the City using Marriott, Hilton, and Amex points.
London is one of the most desirable cities in the world — and also one of the most expensive. Hotel rates in central London (Mayfair, Knightsbridge, the City) can routinely reach £400–£1,500 per night. Transatlantic flights in business class? £3,000–£7,000 return. With the right points strategy, you can dramatically reduce or eliminate both.
Getting to London on Points
Virgin Atlantic Flying Club — The Best Business Class Path
Virgin Atlantic’s Upper Class cabin to London Heathrow is consistently rated among the best transatlantic products. The airline’s Flying Club is the sweet spot program for US–London flights:
- New York (JFK) to London (LHR) in Upper Class: 50,000 Virgin Points one-way (off-peak) to 60,000 (peak). Upper Class includes lounge access on both ends plus a full flat bed.
- Los Angeles (LAX) to London: 60,000 Virgin Points one-way in Upper Class
How to earn Virgin Points: Transfer from Chase Ultimate Rewards (1:1), Amex Membership Rewards (1:1), or Capital One Miles (1:1). A single Chase Sapphire Preferred sign-up bonus is worth most of a one-way transatlantic Upper Class flight.
Virgin charges modest fuel surcharges on its own metal (~$100–$200 one-way) — much less than British Airways.
British Airways Avios — Multiple Carrier Options
BA Avios open three different paths to London:
- British Airways metal from JFK/EWR/BOS: 70,000–90,000 Avios business class one-way. Fuel surcharges can be £300–£600 each way, significantly eroding value.
- Iberia metal from JFK: 35,000 Avios business class one-way (peak: 45,000). Iberia’s surcharges are minimal. This is the single best-value Avios transatlantic redemption if you can find Iberia availability.
- Aer Lingus from BOS/JFK (via Dublin): 32,500 Avios business class one-way, minimal surcharges, US pre-clearance at Dublin.
American AAdvantage — British Airways Partner
Book British Airways flights using AAdvantage miles:
- JFK–LHR Business: ~70,000–90,000 AAdvantage miles one-way
- Fuel surcharges still apply when booking BA metal through AAdvantage
United MileagePlus — Polaris Business via Newark
United’s Polaris Business Class from EWR to LHR:
- ~70,000 United miles one-way (with rare saver availability)
- The Star Alliance approach if you prefer United’s product and lounge network

London Arrival Tips for Award Travelers
- London has two main airports: Heathrow (LHR) and Gatwick (LGW). Most US carriers fly into Heathrow. Virgin Atlantic’s Upper Class Clubhouse is at Heathrow T3 — one of the best airport lounges in the world.
- Central London by Tube: The Piccadilly Line runs directly from Heathrow to Green Park and Piccadilly Circus (zone 1). Far cheaper than a taxi or minicab.
- Oyster card vs. contactless: Tap in/out with a contactless Visa/Mastercard (no foreign transaction fee) directly — no need to buy an Oyster card for a short trip.
- Airport lounge with Priority Pass: Both Heathrow and Gatwick have Priority Pass lounges, though Heathrow’s are best in the premium terminals.
Flight pricing verified using program partner charts as of June 2026. Hotel points rates are dynamic and subject to change.
