How to Travel to Dubai on Points: The Complete Award Booking Guide

Which points and miles to use for Dubai, step-by-step booking, best hotels on points, business class awards, and tips for US and Indian travelers.

By The Points Editor

Dubai is one of the most popular award travel destinations in the world — and for good reason. The city offers world-class hotels at (relatively) modest points costs, a major aviation hub connecting East and West, and genuinely extraordinary experiences accessible with the right loyalty currencies. Whether you’re flying from New York, Mumbai, or London, there’s a clear points path to Dubai.

Which Miles to Use for Dubai Flights

Option 1: Emirates Skywards (Best for Emirates Flights)

For flying on Emirates itself, Skywards miles are the natural choice. Business class from New York to Dubai costs approximately 85,000–120,000 Skywards miles one-way. First Class runs 150,000–200,000+.

Earn Skywards miles by transferring from Chase or Amex (1:1), or via the Emirates co-branded Mastercard.

Option 2: United MileagePlus (Best for Star Alliance to Dubai)

Air India operates flights between the US and Dubai as a Star Alliance member. United MileagePlus can be used to book Air India flights to Dubai (or connecting through Delhi) at Saver award pricing: roughly 60,000–70,000 miles round-trip in economy, more for business.

Option 3: American AAdvantage (Etihad and Qatar Partners)

Etihad Airways (Abu Dhabi) and Qatar Airways (Doha) are both Oneworld-adjacent carriers with strong Dubai connections. AAdvantage can book Oneworld partners — Qatar Airways business class to the Gulf from the US runs about 70,000 miles one-way.

Option 4: Chase → Flying Blue for Codeshares

Air France–KLM Flying Blue covers some Dubai routes. During Flying Blue Promo Awards (monthly flash sales), fares to the Middle East can drop to 30,000–40,000 miles one-way in economy or significantly reduced business rates.

Best Hotels in Dubai on Points

Dubai has exceptional options across multiple loyalty programs:

World of Hyatt Properties in Dubai

Hyatt has a growing footprint in Dubai. The Park Hyatt Dubai (at the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club) is one of the most elegantly designed hotels in the city, with lush gardens and a marina setting. It sits at a moderate Hyatt category, typically requiring 18,000–25,000 Hyatt points per night.

Transfer Chase UR → Hyatt at 1:1 for the best path. A 5-night stay might cost 90,000–125,000 Hyatt points, versus $1,200–$2,000 in cash.

Marriott Bonvoy Properties

Dubai has over 25 Marriott-affiliated properties including the W Dubai – Mina Seyahi, The Ritz-Carlton Dubai, and several Courtyards and Sheratons at lower point costs.

The Ritz-Carlton Dubai and W Dubai require 40,000–85,000 Bonvoy points per night depending on dates and category. Transfer Amex → Bonvoy for this path.

Hilton Hotels in Dubai

Hilton Honors properties include the Hilton Dubai Creek, Hilton Dubai The Walk, and Conrad Dubai (upscale). Conrad Dubai is an aspirational redemption at around 80,000–120,000 Hilton points per night, while the standard Hilton properties run 25,000–40,000 per night.

Transfer Amex → Hilton at 1:2 (1,000 Amex = 2,000 Hilton points). Amex transfers effectively become 2,000 Hilton points per 1,000 MR, making Hilton more accessible than it appears.

Accor (Sofitel, Pullman, Fairmont)

Dubai has excellent Accor properties including the legendary Atlantis The Palm (Autograph Collection, can be booked with Marriott Bonvoy). The Sofitel Dubai Downtown and Pullman Dubai offer good value via Accor Live Limitless points. For HDFC and Axis Indian cardholders, Accor is accessible through loyalty partnerships.

Step-by-Step: Planning Your Dubai Award Trip

Step 1: Decide on your currency US travelers with Chase: → Hyatt for hotel, Skywards/United for flights US travelers with Amex: → Hilton or Marriott for hotel, Skywards for flights Indian travelers with HDFC/Axis: → SmartBuy for flights, transfer to Marriott or Hilton for hotels

Step 2: Search flight award space

  • Emirates awards: check at emirates.com (toggle “Use Miles”)
  • United/Star Alliance: search at united.com
  • AAdvantage/Oneworld: search at aa.com

Step 3: Confirm hotel availability

  • Hyatt: hyatt.com → Use Points toggle
  • Marriott: marriott.com → Use Points toggle

Step 4: Transfer points and book Transfer only after confirming availability — award space can change. Transfers are irreversible.

What to Do in Dubai (and How Points Help)

Beyond flights and hotels, Dubai offers several experiences worth booking:

  • Dubai Frame, Burj Khalifa At The Top, Desert Safaris: Book through Viator with affiliate links (when available on this site) for curated tours
  • Dubai Mall and Souk Madinat Jumeirah: Free; walking distance from many hotel-points properties
  • Dubai Creek and Abra rides: Under $1 — points don’t help here, but it’s a cultural must

Travel Insurance for Dubai

Visitors to Dubai need valid travel insurance. SafetyWing and World Nomads both cover Dubai. Requirements: your insurance must have minimum $100,000 medical coverage. Both providers offer plans that meet UAE entry requirements.

Best Time to Visit Dubai Using Points

October–April: Peak tourism season; hotel rates are high in cash, but points availability at Hyatt and Marriott is often good because award nights compete with expensive corporate rates. This is the best time weather-wise (18–30°C).

May–September: Summer, extremely hot (40–50°C). Cash hotel prices drop significantly, but so does points value per redeemed night (you’re giving up less in savings). Consider redeeming points outside summer unless you’re comfortable with extreme heat.
