Thailand on Points: How to Book Bangkok and Phuket Using Miles and Hotel Points

Award travel guide to Thailand — getting to Bangkok and Phuket on miles, the best luxury hotels on points, and which programs offer the best value for Southeast Asia.

By The Points Editor

Thailand is the ideal award travel destination: extremely high aspirational hotel values (especially in Phuket beachfront luxury), a well-connected airline network, and a currency (Baht) that makes cash spending reasonable even when your accommodation is on points. Bangkok and Phuket together form one of the best two-city itineraries in the world for the points-optimized traveler.

Getting to Bangkok (BKK/DMK/BKK) on Points

Bangkok’s main international airport is Suvarnabhumi (BKK), with Don Mueang (DMK) serving budget airlines for regional hops.

Chase Ultimate Rewards → Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer

The most reliable path to Bangkok from the US:

  • Transfer Chase UR → KrisFlyer (1:1, 1-3 days)
  • Book Singapore Airlines Business Class (SQ) to Bangkok via Singapore
  • Cost: Approximately 93,000–105,000 KrisFlyer miles for US West Coast → Singapore → Bangkok in Business
  • Singapore Airlines has a brief Singapore layover (BKK is a natural extension of SIN routing)

The Singapore Airlines Business Class Suites product (on select routes) or regular Business Class is excellent. Saver award availability on SQ is competitive with good advance booking.

Cathay Pacific Asia Miles (via Hong Kong)

Cathay Pacific routes naturally transit Hong Kong (HKG), which is a major hub for Thailand:

  • US West Coast to Bangkok via Hong Kong Business: ~90,000–110,000 Asia Miles one-way
  • Cathay has its own CX premium lounge in HKG, one of the world’s better airport lounges
  • Earn Asia Miles from transfers from Amex MR, Chase UR, Citi TYP, and Capital One

Qatar Airways Privilege Club (via Doha)

If you’re routed through the Middle East, Qatar Airways flies BKK via Doha (DOH):

  • QSuite Business Class (the world’s best business class per many reviewers): 80,000–100,000 Avios one-way via partner chart
  • Qatar is an oneworld member, meaning AAdvantage miles and BA Avios can book QSuites
  • The Hamad International Airport lounge (Al Mourjan) is one of the world’s best

Getting to Phuket (HKT) on Points

Phuket has its own international airport with connections from Bangkok and direct flights from selected hubs:

  • Most award redemptions route Bangkok → Phuket on a separate ticket (budget carriers: AirAsia, Thai Smile)
  • Some KrisFlyer and Asia Miles routes offer single-ticket Bangkok-to-Phuket extensions
  • Short BKK–HKT segment is ~1 hour; Phuket domestic connection is sometimes bookable with miles but at low value

Best strategy: Book your long-haul award into Bangkok, then book a cheap (~$30–$80) AirAsia segment separately to Phuket.

Practical Thailand Tips for Award Travelers

  1. Best time to visit: November–April (cool, dry season). Avoid June–September monsoon in Phuket (west coast gets hit hard). Bangkok is year-round but oppressively hot in April.
  2. Thai visa: US and most Western passport holders get 60-day visa on arrival (as of 2026, verify current policy before travel).
  3. Currency: Thai Baht. Use a Wise or Charles Schwab debit card for cash from ATMs — near-zero forex fees.
  4. Tipping: Not mandatory culturally, but appreciated. $1–$2 per hotel housekeeping night is standard.
  5. Getting around Bangkok: BTS Skytrain and MRT are excellent for central areas; taxi/Grab for broader city.

Award pricing reflects typical range as of June 2026. Verify current availability at airline and hotel program websites.
